FAQ

Choose your phone, then tap a question to see the answer. These are the same questions as the FAQ on the About tab in the app.

Do I have to choose Always?

Not required, but we recommend Always for the most complete tracking experience. With While Using the App, tracking still starts and continues when you switch apps or lock the screen, but the status bar always shows the blue indicator and the app can't turn it off. With Always, you can turn it off under Capture Mode. To change it, go to Settings > GeoCourier > Location and choose Always.

What happens if I swipe the app away?

Tracking stops, and the Dynamic Island and Lock Screen display go away. To keep tracking, just switch to another app instead. To stop, tap Stop Tracking.

What if the phone restarts or the system closes the app?

Tracking doesn't resume on its own. Open the app and tap Start Tracking again. If the Dynamic Island or Lock Screen turns orange and shows May Have Stopped, this is what happened.

Can I use it without a server?

Yes. Locations are only saved as records on this phone and aren't sent anywhere.

Where do server setup QR codes come from?

Usually from whoever runs the server. You can also create one on the QR Setup page of this website. If the QR code is an image, choose it from your photos on the scan screen. For a password-protected code, ask the person who gave it to you for the password.

Are failed points resent?

No, each point is sent once. A 2xx response counts as success; other status codes, a JSON response that can't be parsed, network errors, and no response within 10 seconds count as failures. Failed points are still in the record, so you can export them later.

What happens without a network connection?

Tracking, capturing, and saving to the record continue. Sends during that time fail and aren't retried when the connection comes back.

Can I change settings while tracking?

You can switch or edit capture modes, and changes take effect right away. To change servers, stop tracking first so the send stats stay consistent.

How does my server receive the data?

The app sends JSON with POST or PUT. Every field is described on the Payload Spec page of this website. While tracking, tap View Payload in the Tracking tab to see exactly what's sent. Release builds accept only https URLs.

Where are records stored? Are they uploaded?

Only on this phone. They aren't uploaded or backed up to iCloud, and deleting the app deletes them. To keep a copy, export it from the record.

Why is the time in the status bar blue?

It means the app is tracking in the background. Tap it to return to the app. If location access is set to Always, you can turn it off under Capture Mode in the Tracking tab, and background tracking continues. With While Using the App, iOS always shows it.

Don't want it on the Dynamic Island and Lock Screen?

Turn off Show Live Activity While Tracking under Capture Mode in the Tracking tab, or turn off Live Activities for GeoCourier in the Settings app. Tracking isn't affected either way.
